🔥 Top post RE: https://framapiaf.org/@freshrss/116550856825383465 I just updated my FreshRSS instance from 1.28.1 to 1.29.0 by stopping a container I had built myself locally from source, and starting another container that I built myself from source, and the new version is running smoothl… ★ 1
When I'm looking into building a new project from source, and the procedure for setting up its build environment relies on curl | sh, my immediate reaction is that maybe I'm not so interested in that project after all. We have reached the point in the history of computing where Markdown files contain instructions for machines to generate code, but if you want to figure out how to compile something by hand yourself you have to read GitHub Actions YAML. Open Source Software sounds like a really great idea until you realize it's 2026 and a lot of the OSS you rely on is very difficult to build from source yourself. GitHub Actions is proving to be very effective at making projects' build processes only runnable in Github Actions. New blog post; discussion here is welcome: How am I supposed to run my own tools from source? https://www.cliffmccarthy.net/posts/2026-06-06/ In modern Linux, the software environment is largely controlled by the distro’s package manager. … I intend to write more on this in the future, but I think recent events illustrate why it's a problem that most OSS is consumed as binary packages rather than as source code. I continue to find that #bup is a great compression tool for large-scale data: I have an old image of a Linux root disk that has a lot of blank (zeroed) space on it. "Compressing" it into a bup repo was faster than gzipping it, and the r… I'm trying to write some code to interpret Git submodule data and it's a tragic mess. Relative URLs are allowed in .gitmodules, so you can't resolve them without knowing the remote that the referencing repo was originally pulled from. Wh… Does the #forkiverse have its own sub-genre of #bonkwave, and can we call it #forkwave? I've completed "Christmas Tree Farm" - Day 12 - Advent of Code 2025 #AdventOfCode https://adventofcode.com/2025/day/12 I almost missed the e-mail about the ParkMobile data breach settlement because it went to an address that I automatically classify as spam and use to train my Bayesian spam filter, because of the ParkMobile data breach. They're going to g…
