Yesterday, as part of the Palmer LTER cruise, we recovered one of our moorings, deployed in 525 m of water.
When it popped up, we saw the top of two 37” steel floats badly dented. It had been at around 60 m below the surface.

When we looked at the data from a pressure sensor just below the float, we were shocked. In January 2025, the mooring was rammed by a BIG iceberg.
Over the course of 4 hours, the mooring was pulled to 250 m below the surface by the iceberg. And then, in less than 10 minutes, it was over and the mooring was upright again.

A main conclusion of the article is that DOGE disrupted just the kind of government-supported programs that are incredibly cheap and do a tremendous amount of good.
The NYT has a great investigation on DOGE, which sold itself as an effort to fulfill the old dream of cutting government and instead delivered tiny savings and a whole lot of suffering and the elimination of essential spending.
