Very exciting! First clear detection of an atmosphere around an Earth-size planet in the habitable zone of another star.
This is a big step forward in figuring out if "potentially habitable" planets are actually habitable & if red dwarf stars could sustain life.

We now know that interstellar clouds are full of water, alcohols, sugars, and esters. All the basic molecular components you need to make an Old Fashioned or a Margarita.

The first color image from the surface of Mars was released a day later, July 21, 1976.
It was *not* the one that NASA shows you today! Viking scientists were so surprised by the orange skies that they initially shifted the color calibration to make Mars look more Earthlike, before releasing a corrected version 5 days later.

The more we learn, the more we realize that our solar system was shaped by catastrophe. Every body--including our Earth & Moon--is the result of a wild, unpredictable set of collisions. A few different hits & the outcome would have been qu…
The inner moons of Neptune look like they were turned inside out, with deep-interior minerals spattered across their surfaces.
Probably these moons are the shattered remains of earlier satellites that were shredded when a Pluto-like object…

A rich fossil site in China is filling in the little-known transitional details of life before the Cambrian explosion.
It documents the emergence of bilateral symmetry & pushes back the origin of the ancestors of all modern vertebrates.

It's hard to describe how challenging it is to detect air on a planet 49 light years from Earth. Imagine figuring out how to collect these data...then to look at these results and realize, "I see traces of a helium atmosphere!"
But they di…

For the first time, astronomers have detected sugar molecules (erythrulose, to be precise) in deep space, floating near the center of our galaxy. It adds to the evidence for complex prebiotic carbon chemistry in interstellar clouds, even b…
There is so much happening in the heart of Centaurus A. Streams of millions of stars. A massive black hole (within the bright central dot) stirring up the gas and dust. Complex structures, puzzling, never seen before. A lot of cosmic myste…
Infrared images from JWST pierce the gloom & reveal Centaurus A's intricate inner workings: Streams of stars from two colliding galaxies. New stars forming from the wreckage. A black hole, 100 million times as massive as the Sun, shooting …
Centaurus A is the quintessential "peculiar" galaxy. It's a powerful source of radio & x-rays. It looks like two galaxies that smashed into each other. I stared at photos of it for years, wondering what was going on.
Now observations from…
