Some kitchen table surgery today. Trying to improve the transposer on my Hill Italian. It as never designed to transpose, but by taking out the top key and trimming off the side of the keyframe, the keyboard can slide over just enough. When I first set this up though, I cut "just about enough", so it mostly worked, but not quite perfectly. Everyone I've talked to has said some variation of "oh yeah, it took years before I could get a tuning to hold stably", or "you just have to tune a few hundred pianos, and you'll figure it out eventually". I was asked to fill in for the next few months tuning (modern) pianos at McGill. It's something I've vaguely considered getting into for a while, though this opportunity came up very suddenly! Or did, until one of them fell off....! The whole event was made a little more exciting when … This week, I had to move the BIG harpsichord (Beaupré Dulcken) down to a percussion studio for a rehearsal, which means taking it outside, since it won't fit in the regular elevator, and the freight elevator is in another wing which doesn'… Whoops, forgot to keep posting here in the new year, it seems. Last week was a busy "get everything back in shape after a break" week. Tuned a dozen+ instruments at McGill, most of which needed at least two tunings to get close to the righ… Christmas 2 is well underway!
