I recently acquired a hydraulic press for less money than the steel it's made of would cost new. It's old, it's dirty, it's homemade. The control valve is WWII military surplus, the pump possibly the same vintage, the motor a beautiful old 3-phase beast.
It "worked the last time I used it" according to the previous owner, but I don't have 3 phase power handy, so I can't easily test. It's going to

The nameplates in the control valve and pump. Are they the same vintage? Same aircraft? Who knows.

As with any project, the first step is to start taking it apart. The second step is to go buy a shop crane and some chain so you can take it apart. Here is the C-frame, it's about 4 feet tall (~1.3m).
It's made of 3/4 inch (~19mm) steel plate, with half inch (~10mm) steel forming the edge walls. How strong is this? Who knows, I haven't found a quick and easy way to calculate that, but if someone

I mean, isn't that a beautiful motor? Don't you want to build a machine just so you can use it? (General Electric, 3 phase, 1 HP (.75KW)

I love home made machines. Usually, that is, it really depends on who made it. This has all the hallmarks of something pieced together by someone like me, with a shop full of metal and junk, basic welding skills, and the instinct to over-e…
Now, I could put a newer 3000 psi pump on it, and triple the force, but could the valve take it? Could the cylinder? Who knows. I looked for specs on the valve and only found a reference to the part in a maintenance manual for a world war …
So, a hydraulic press pushes down very, very hard on things. In my case, I'll use it for forging metal. Once it's out all fixed up, that is.
I need to replace the motor with one I can run on my shop power, and see what's leaking so much t…
So what does it do? If you don't know about hydraulics, it's basically a way of using leverage to do work - but instead of a long lever and pivot, or gears, or a chain drive with different sized sprockets, the leverage comes from fluid pre…
I really feel for any human developer whose name is actually Claude.
Start by renaming every civic feature that has a president's name on it.
Let's stop naming things after heros.
Let's stop naming them after men.
Let's stop naming them after people.
Name roads after local dishes, or ideals, or movements, or a feeling the engineer got when surveying the right of way. Buildings a…
One final thought. Does it need to be straight, flat lumber to make useful things? Nope - traditional Western furniture tends to be made of flat straight boards, but you can certainly use your twisty lumber to make twisty things. It's a di…
