Enormous melt event ongoing in #Greenland right now
One of the biggest we've seen.
Much of the interior melt is likely refreezing, but large mass losses at lower elevations

There is a big melt event going on in #Greenland.
It's been fairly extreme for the time of year the last few days.
Much of this melt will refreeze in the snowpack, but the snow buffer gets fuller every year as these kind of melt events are becoming more common.

Interestingly persistent #melt across #Greenland - still very high and widespread. Some fresh snow and rain damping the #Ice loss slightly.
The accumulated mass budget is close to average for the time of year, which is extraordinary given the huge amount of late snow. The high melt this year has burnt through it over a week...

High pressure over Greenland resulting in strongly negative surface mass balance and melting over more than 50% of the area, both quite unusual so late in the season.
According to the #GFS model, it will remain warm for at least the next three days. It can therefore be expected that the SMB will end close to the average 1981-2010.

The onset of the ablation season in Greenland is defined as the first of at least 3 days in a row with a surface mass balance below -1 km³ (= -1 gigaton). In 2026, this was on 1 July, the 3rd latest since 1981.

Large melt event ongoing in Greenland the last few days. Well above average, the last few days around 50% of the ice sheet surface had some melting - most of this refroze but in some areas, especially western Greenland, and at lower elevat…

Happy New Year!
First September is the first day of the surface mass balance year in Greenland. Still quite some melt around the margins in south and west Greenland but massive dump of snow in the East.

The "surface mass balance (SMB) year" 2022/23 (1 September 2022 to 31 August 2023) ended with an accumulated SMB of 397.8 Gt, about 50 Gt more than the median 1980-2023 and thus rank 29 of 43 years for which we have data. This is the surfa…
