After that I cranked up the base voltage on C2 to 6V. Effectively raising the bias voltage to 5.5V after a while. In this situation the MLCC still measured somewhat over 5uF. Which is really decent, I did expect it to perform way worse…
5/n If you calculate 0.4V/100k of my R1 then you get 40 uA which is about the same than the charging current. Which explains why the measurement is way off.
As a result I switched to the HP34461 as capacitance meter and use it in it's high…

Sadly that also means that when measuring we will get 5.4V on C2: the baseline 5V from V1 + the 0.4V from the charging cycle.
And this leads to having a current through R1 again, which affects the measurement.
I tried to add L1 before …
3/n Now back to my original circuit.
The trick is to use a value for C1 which is MUCH higher than C2, which is the DUT (Device under Test). In that case C1 blocks all the DC voltage from my capacity meter but the overall capacity is mostly…

Most capacity meters simply charge the capacitor with a constant current. Due to the fact that the charge rises linear with time and thus also voltage rises linear with time, we just need to measure how long it took to raise the voltag…
Tried to figure out the quick way how much capacity a nominal 10µF/20V 0805 X7R MLCC looses when handling 3.3, 5 and 6V.
Played around for 2 hours with various capacity meters I have around and found out that all of them have a way too low…

#SPCX is now under 120 USD. Trading closed for today. We'll see how it goes, but the direction seems rather clear.

@kelseyhightower nails it. The problem isnot to write code but to understand and maintain code.

On the spectrum of totally random monkey and good intentional program changing, those current AI models (even frontier ones) are somewhere in the middle. They don't c…
