The guitar body is pretty much done now! After a month curing, I gave the lacquer a 2000 grit sand, then 3000, 4000, and 5000, followed by a lilght polish (I don't want it too shiny).
Waiting for the neck lacquer to cure now (another week …
Then I applied more lacquer, over the course of a few days, and it's currently handing by a window curing, where it'll stay for a month or so until that slight smell of solvents has gone completely.
The decals took practice, so I'm glad I printed my own rather than having to purchase them over and over again on eBay. I ruined about 8 or 9 🤣
Next, I needed that 'Fender Telecaster' logo. So I printed onto decal paper. I even restored the original serial number stamp, because why not 🤷♂️
I started with an amber tinted lacquer, to give the wood a warmer, slightly yellow colour.
So I turned my attention to the neck, which had a slightly orange tint that I wasn't keen on.
Once I'd finished sanding, I masked off the rosewood fretboard ready for the next stage.
So I had more mist sprays to get the colour back on that bit of the guitar, then more lacquer. At that point it was time to leave it to cure.
I came back a week later to drop-fill the tiny wing-shaped craters, and it has now been 'gassing …
All looked great, so I got back to lacquering. But a fairly spindly fly, about 1cm long, flew into the lacquer as it sprayed onto the guitar. I managed to get it out, but the wings somehow reacted with the solvents and burned two holes thr…
So I had to give those bits a mist spray to re-apply the colour, then back to the lacquer.
When I had a few more layers of lacquer on it, I sanded back with a much finer grit 2000 as opposed to the 1000 I used first time. Took a bit longe…
Once I was happy, the lacquer layers began. It got 9 coats over 3 days, then was ready for a levelling sand. Problem there was I used too heavy a grit and managed to sand through the colour to the primer in two small places 😬
I then had a steep learning curve on the painting process (it's not an easy thing to get right with aerosol cans, and was done over multiple days, with multiple coats on each day) while trying to avoid dust and flies landing in it.
