🔥 Top post Rewatched the pilot for the first time in 30 years and, y'know what? -- this holds up, modulo the requisite sexism and inherent colonialism in anything rooted in the western genre. It is at least trying to engage with both of those things on some level. Wish we got more of this. ★ 3
Y'know, there's nothing to lift my mood like the middle third of the Dr. Who theme song. Just hits me right in Junior Year of college (7th Doctor era) ★ 1 I'm no writer, but I have read a lot, and specifically read a lot of SF. And I know just enough history. There is a much more amazing story inside this setting than the "white savior is kind of a bitch, and we need to be chaotic and anar… We also get plenty of homophobia and fatphobia, but there you go. Gotta make your villains fat and gay to show how evil they are! There's some complicated parallel in one of Herbert's other books, Whipping Star, which involves (ultimately… We don't get the oppression of the people, the 10,000 years of ossified colonialism and fossilized social mobility and inequality. We instead mostly get the political machinations of the courtiers and the powerful. We get Leto II explain… And this kinds of leads us to where Herbert eventually pushes the series, clumsily, with his Golden Path. We have a "great man" theory of history going on. We have Institutions (the great houses, the emperor, the catholic church (the ben… We have drugs and materials harvested from the life forms of different worlds (spice, the juice the mentats use, shigawire). We have house atomics and the lasgun/shield type explosions. We have antigravity, etc. But, much like with Star… ★ 1 But we also have the technological underpinnings of this starfaring civilization, reduced to a weird afterthought. There *were* computers and thinking machines, with which we spread to the stars (presumably), but we don't have them anymor… If I understand things correctly, the underlying premise of Spice (and, I assume, potentially other awareness spectrum drugs) is that it's possible to expand your consciousness into both the past and the future -- we universally have a kin… I was always confused by the Spacing Guild navigators -- I thought they were psionically jumping the ships. Having read more and understood things better, I see now that they were "just" navigating hyperspace (or whatever). But at least … I've read up through God Emperor, over the years. Dune proper is clearly a play on the white savior/lawrence of arabia, and ecology, and the use of "awareness spectrum drugs" of which Spice is specifically said to be *one*. Of course, we … The overall setting of Dune is kind of weirdly incoherent. I get that's not really the point, and I also get that I haven't actually read the whole corpus, especially the posthumous books by his son and Kevin J. Anderson, but still. I feel… ★ 1
