About

Avalon Time was a delightful comedy and variety show that aired during the late 1930s and early 1940s, a peak period of the Golden Age of Radio when such programs were a staple of American entertainment. Broadcast on NBC’s Red Network, it ran from October 1, 1938, to May 1, 1940, delivering a mix of humor, music, and lighthearted sketches to listeners tuning in on Saturday nights. Sponsored by Avalon cigarettes, the 30-minute show was a showcase for some of the era’s brightest talents, most notably marking the radio debut of the legendary comedian Red Skelton. The program kicked off with Don McNeill as its initial host, a familiar voice from The Breakfast Club, but it was Red Skelton who became its defining star. Skelton took over as emcee in early 1939, bringing his boundless energy and knack for physical comedy—translated brilliantly into audio form—into living rooms across the country. His tenure began around January 7, 1939, and he remained the heart of the show until its end, introducing characters like the dim-witted “Willie Lump-Lump” and the mischievous “Junior, the Mean Widdle Kid,” whose catchphrase “I dood it!” became a national sensation.
