In Jane Austens Persuasion, we meet Anne Elliot, a once vibrant and thoughtful 19-year-old who accepted a marriage proposal from the charming but impoverished naval officer, Frederick Wentworth. Despite his ambition and promise, Annes snobbish father, Sir Walter, and her self-absorbed sister Elizabeth disapprove of the match, leading Anne to break her engagement under the influence of her friend, Lady Russell.
