Fifteen years ago on this very day, August 27th 2011, the then President Mary McAleese made a special visit to Gorthaganny in North Roscommon to officially unveil a stunning life-size memorial statue of Roscommon football legend, Dermot Earley. The first anniversary of Dermot’s death took place earlier that year on June 24th. Only just discovered that Mark English, who won the 800m gold at the European championships in Birmingham last night, has strong Roscommon roots. Mark's grandfather, Pat English, came from Corbooly, Knockcroghery and played with the legendary St Patricks teams in the 1940s. Mark himself became the first male Irish athlete to win individual gold at a European outdoor championships. 👏👏👏 #Roscommon

Very sad to to hear the news about the untimely death of former Galway footballer Paul Clancy. Paul was a brother-in-law and Moycullen club mate of former Roscommon footballer, Don Connellan who passed away last August. Don was 51. Paul was 49. Both taken by illness.
